Rodent Control

Rodents are the most common call we take in New Brunswick, and the most misunderstood. Catching a few mice is easy. Keeping them out of a building through a Fredericton winter is the actual job.

Signs you have a rodent problem

Most people call us after hearing something. In order of how often they turn out to be rodents:

• Scratching or scurrying in walls and ceilings at night, usually shortly after dark
• Droppings in cupboards, under sinks, in the pantry or along basement walls
• Gnaw marks on food packaging, baseboards, wiring or the corners of storage bins
• A musty, persistent smell in an enclosed space like a utility room
• Shredded insulation, paper or fabric gathered into a nest
• Daytime sightings, which usually mean the population is big enough to push the bolder animals out to forage

What rodents actually damage

The food contamination is obvious. The expensive damage is not. Rodents gnaw constantly because their incisors never stop growing, and wiring is a favourite target — chewed insulation inside a wall is a fire risk you cannot see. They also foul insulation, which is why an untreated attic infestation eventually turns into an insulation replacement bill.

How we handle it

1. Inspection. We walk the property inside and out, find the runs, the droppings and the entry points, and identify the species. What we find decides the plan — not a standard package.
2. Remove the attractant. Bins, feeders, compost and pet food are what make your building worth visiting. We tell you exactly what to change.
3. Control the active population. Traps and, where warranted, tamper-resistant stations, placed where the evidence says the animals travel.
4. Exclusion. Seal the gaps: foundation penetrations, vents, gaps under doors, utility entries, roof lines. This is the step that decides whether the problem comes back next fall.
5. Follow-up. We come back to confirm activity has stopped rather than assume it.

In a multi-unit building, treating one apartment while the others go untouched moves the animals rather than removing them, which is why we work at the building level with property managers and schedule around tenants. Why fall is the busy season

Rodents move indoors when the nights turn cold, which in New Brunswick means the calls spike from September onward. The best time to seal a building is before that — a summer exclusion visit is cheaper and less disruptive than a January infestation in a finished basement.
